Letter From the CEO: Difficult Discussions

If you feel like 2020 has been marked by a constant state of upheaval, you’re definitely not alone. After months of dealing with quarantines and stay-at-home orders, the nation has been faced with another historic challenge as several incidents of police violence have reignited the Black Lives Matter movement and pushed issues of race and inequality firmly to the forefront of the national conversation.

To be clear, this conversation is one that’s long overdue. The United States’ long and problematic history with race, inequality, and violence against people of color is something we must all reckon with and address headon. We here at Intercare are committed to owning our own part in the problem and to being an active part of the solution going forward. Silence and complicity have never been acceptable and we will no longer be silent or complicit in the face of racial injustice.

As I explained in an email to the Intercare family in May, following the murder of George Floyd, this commitment begins with my actions as CEO in cultivating an organization that focuses on equality for all and it’s on me as a leader to ensure that Intercare’s culture reflects our values, including the unequivocal belief that Black Lives Matter and that it’s on everyone—and especially those in positions of power—to stand with communities who suffer injustices.

In this month’s newsletter, we’re providing resources specifically aimed at addressing issues of race and inequality within the autism community, including information about how lawmakers and treatment providers can better serve Black and Latinx children with ASD and tips for parents embarking on the challenging task of discussing complex topics like race and inequality with an autistic child. Finally, we want to issue an invitation to the entire Intercare family: If there are additional resources that we can provide to help you and your loved ones navigate this difficult time, please reach out and let us know.
